Welcome Message

Prof. M S Swaminathan
Conference Scientific Advisor (2016 - 2017)
M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, India

Dear Colleagues,

I am extremely happy that a World Congress on Biotechnology is being organised at Hyderabad in October this year (2017). I am equally happy because this particular congress will concentrate on sustainable and healthy life. After all the purpose of life is to lead a healthy life as a purposeful life and sustainability can be achieved only if we lead a purposeful life.

Sustainability has three dimensions: the environmental dimension which is going to be very important. This is why we say we are entering the year of anthroposium. Anthroposium where human beings will shape the environment will shape many of the outputs of modern development. We have also apart from anthroposium, the social dimensions are important for social acuity. Environmental dimensions are important can show food security, livelihood security, nutrition security and all forms of security, which the soil, the land, the water, the biodiversity & climate all of them are important. biotechnology is very powerful tool biological technology it has implications for health, medicine, agriculture, animal husbandry, aquatic fisheries both Inland fisheries and marine fisheries all of them are influenced by biotechnology.

Biotechnology is a powerful tool which can help us to transfer genes across sexual barriers for example in our foundation (MS Swaminathan Research Foundation) we have sea water resistant paddy derived from mangrove genes, have you seen a marina? The genes from mangroves for salt tolerance have been transferred to rice. Therefore seemingly impossible task can be achieved we should ensure economic sustainability.

Therefore the world conference is an important one, timely one when our country is looking at biotechnology in a serious way both from the point of view of medical application, new vaccines foranimals, new vaccines for human beings, malaria vaccine and so on.

So we entering into a new age of science opened up by biotechnology and I wish this conference a great success.
